Let’s see – I left you all at Costa Maya yesterday. Well, our next stop was Cozumel, and boy was I sore! We did so much trekking around the previous day I wanted to just lie around the room. But, you don’t get to Cozumel every day, so off we went! Good thing I have a comfy pair of sneakers.
First we had to get to Playa del Carmen by ferry, which was hot again, even with the breeze from the water! Fortunately, we got to ride a bus to a place called Tulum. It was air conditioned and very relaxing. But I have to say that Tulum is really worth the trip. I know Bob was thrilled – he loves ancient civilizations almost as much as he loves golf, and that’s really saying something! Well, we walked and walked (again!), but it was great. There are these amazing paintings that date back to ancient times. It’s by the sea, and I got some gorgeous photos. The ruins aren’t in great shape, but there is still so much left to appreciate. The writing is so strange it’s almost like it’s from some culture from space.
The Castle, as they call one of the ruins, is really well preserved. Sun screen is VERY important for this tour! Some of our fellow cruisers looked like boiled lobsters by the end of the day. The breeze off of the ocean helped to cool things down a little, but that tropical sun is vicious!
Tulum was definitely the highlight of our visit. I bought some adorable little clay pots in Playa del Carmen after we got back from Tulum. It was so hot though, so I cut the shopping short and we headed back to the ship for some big cool drinks. We had another amazing shipboard dinner (I love cruise ship food!) and made it an early night.
The next day, the ship stopped at Grand Cayman. Since Bob had his ancient ruins, it was time for me to have MY shore excursion! Unfortunately, this wasn’t a great pick on my part. It is fun to see sea turtles swimming around (you can even pick them up!), but they do raise some for food. I guess it’s better than hunting wild ones, but still, it felt strange seeing endangered turtles in tanks raised for food!
We left the turtle place and went to a butterfly farm instead. This was more my speed – beautiful flowers and butterflies. We did a little walking around, but it was MUCH more relaxing than all that hiking through jungles and up pyramids!
The next day was an at sea day. After all of our hiking, it was nice to play around in the casino and see a show. I liked it – Bob thought the acts were a little corny, but even he had to admit the kids in the show had some real talent!
So we ended yet another super successful cruise! It was a little sad taking the taxi back home from the dock in Miami, but I know we’ll be off on another adventure before too long! After Mitzi’s baby comes, that is! I want to play grandma for awhile (smile).
